The Beatitudes give us a portrait of Jesus. We learn how to live as Jesus lived. We learn how to have a blessed life, a happiness that does not come from outward circumstances but from our relationship with Christ.
The first beatitude is foundational. We must be poor in spirit - that is humble enough to know we cannot save ourselves if we're going to accept God's mercy in Christ.
